All of us kind of have an horcrux – and it’s called our ego. Voldermort is like a case study in what an out of control ego looks like. In Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth, he describes the ego as being a split in the human psyche in which we imagine a conceptualized version of ourself. Basically, you are not the voice in your head, you are the awareness of that voice.
Now, let’s talk about Moldy Voldy. His whole shtick is that he fears death. All of our egos also fear death, because our egos identify with form. Our egos don’t believe that we live on after death – they are obsessed with staying alive in physical form because our egos identify with material reality – stuff, if you will. Voldermort literally contains his soul within stuff. But more specifically, stuff that boosts his identity because of their high value: the diadem of Ravenclaw, the cup of Helga Hufflepuff. Our soul is an eternal awareness that we cannot access when the ego runs rampant and demands our attention on the physical plane.
Now, silly Voldermort. Don’t you know that we are all already immortal because of our souls? If our souls are energy, and matter and energy are interchangeable, then energy cannot be destroyed – only transformed. By extension, our souls cannot be destroyed.
Voldermort identifying so much with form by literally encasing his soul within physical matter prevents it from going on to a different plane of existence. He lived his life through his ego, constantly trying to fight the present moment, always fearing a perceived enemy – death.
Because Voldermort lived his life through the ego, constantly identifying threats all around him; he could not access the present moment where our awareness lies – the awareness that knows intuitively that we are immortal beings.
So in a sense, we all have a horcrux, because we all have an ego. While the ego is not our soul like a horcrux is, our egos are trying to keep us alive through form.
